How can I apply for a dog?
To apply for a service dog, the first step is to contact
Canix and to explain your situation and your requirements. We
will together with you evaluate which type of dog that is most
suitable for you and whether it will be able to assist you. The next
step is that we send you an application form which must be completed
and returned to us. This application form asks for very detailed
information about your situation, your life-style, what type of
person you are etc. and it is used for selecting a dog with a
character and temperament that matches you and for designing the
training program for the dog.
Will I know enough about dogs to use an
assistance dog?
Before transferring the dog to its new owner, you will be taught
everything you need by Canix, e.g. how to handle the dog, how to maintain
the obedience level it has at the time of delivery, how to take care of
the dog and how to teach the dog new skills that you may need. This
information will be given to you as written material that must be studied
and during a one to two week (depending upon the type of dog) training
seminar when handing over the dog.
How are the dogs transferred?
At the time of transfer, a person from Canix will spend one to two weeks
with the recipient to instruct the new owner how to make the most of the
dog. The dog will at this point know all the commands and the 1-2 weeks
therefore focus on how to handle the dog, teaching the dog to obey its new
handler, and how to maintain and expand the level of obedience and known
commands. At the end of this instruction period, the pair must demonstrate
to the instructor that they know how to collaborate and to get safely
around in public.
What happens after I receive the dog?
After a dog has been transferred, we will maintain contact with the person
during the lifetime of the dog. Canix wants to assure that the pair works
and continues to work well together and it is therefore important that the
person can contact Canix immediately in case of problems or doubts.
Another example is, while the dog is still young, the recipient may need
to teach the dog an additional task and in this case we can also be
contacted either to train the dog or to help the recipient to do it.
Legally, the receiving person rents the dog for life. This does not have
any economical consequences, e.g. regular payments through-out the
lifetime of the dog, but this format has been chosen because Canix has a
responsibilities towards both the recipient, as described above, and the
dog. The dog is a living being and we have the responsibility to assure it
is not neglected or mal-treated. If we learn of such occurrences, the dog
is immediately returned to our center.
How much is an assistance dog?
The price for
an assistance dog usually around USD 20.000. This is a considerable price, but it must be
seen in relation to the numerous working hours which are invested in the
education and the complicated and expensive selection process for the
puppy. 50% of the price must be paid upon ordering the dog and the
remaining is due upon delivery. If the delivery of the dog is made in the
home of the recipient, the travel and lodging costs involved is the
responsibility of the recipient.
Are there ways to finance an assistance dog?
In some countries it is possible to seek financial assistance from
foundations, organizations and private companies to obtain an assistance
dog. To acknowledge the donation, a logo from the sponsor can e.g. be
placed on the cape of the dog. Another option is donations from private
citizens, who believe this is a good cause and who wish to make a
difference. Finally, in some countries the Government will subsidize an
assistance dog.
The solution therefore depends upon the country in which you live.
However, if you decide to seek financial assistance to obtain an
assistance dog Canix will help you in the application process by providing
detailed information on the value of assistance dogs.
