A puppy goes through several phases during its development. These phases are
like windows that open at a certain age and stay open for a certain amount
of time and then close again. While they are open they allow you to
influence certain aspects of your dog’s behaviour and concept of life in a
particularly effective way during the course of each particular phase. The
window will then close again. You can, of course, influence your dog in
these matters also later in life, but it will be considerably more
complicated and laborious. An important point to keep in mind is that,
independent of your awareness, you are still influencing your dog’s future
behaviour, because the window is open so the dog learns whether you want it
or not. So inadvertently you may not be meeting your dogs need for guidance
on special subjects at the right times and end out having a dog with a
different behaviour that the one you wanted.
Because not many people are aware of the importance of
their reactions to their puppies at certain ages we are offering a
consultant service of two hours where we will shortly explain the most
important highlights in a puppy’s natural development seen from a
behavioural and educational perspective. We will also explain how a puppy
owner can best take advantage of this natural development and work with the
puppy instead of against the puppy in the education of their future adult
dog. So we will discuss what you should expect from your new puppy and what
the puppy expects from you and so advise you on the most adequate way to
react in several key situations. If you react in the right way the first
time a behaviour shows (a desirable as well as an undesirable behaviour) you
will avoid your puppy to get confused and build a better relationship
between you and your dog.
We also offer an extended version of this service, where we guide you on a
regular basis and therefore have the possibility to go more in depth with
the doubts you may come across with your individual puppy all the way
through its development. An example could be that we, just before you pick
up your puppy, have a two hour talk about the same subjects as described
above. However, it allows us to go more in depth as we only have to cover
the general aspects of puppy development and the first four weeks in your
household. Then we talk again for about one hour when the puppy is 11-12
weeks old, when it is 15-16 weeks old, when it is about to turn 5 months old
and when it is 8 months old. These times are set because they coincide with
the opening and closing of some of the above mentioned developmental phases
or “windows”, and you can therefore expect a change in your puppy’s
behaviour and the puppy needs a change in your behaviour.
Of course, our services can be designed after your individual needs and
desires.
